August 3rd - Day 52
“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” - Robert Burns
So far on our trip, other than not being able to visit Yellowstone in June, most days have gone pretty much as planned and we have stayed right on schedule. Today that changed. We’ll just say we had to pivot more than once…
A few highlights/pivots from the day:
Once we got up and going for the day, we started our drive from Big Bear Lake to San Diego. It ended up being a fair bit longer than planned as the primary highway was closed due to landslides caused by the flash floods a few days ago. So we pivoted. The alternative route was longer and very crooked. Not the worst we’ve been on, but certainly a slow drive in an RV.
Going to San Diego, our plan had been to visit USS Midway, but they do not have RV parking and any nearby parking that would accommodate was taken. So we pivoted. Instead, we ended up spending the afternoon at Balboa Park. Everyone enjoyed it there and wished we could have spent many hours more (if not days) had time permitted. The highlight for Obadiah here was the model railroad museum that we toured. He was very thrilled.
After leaving San Diego, we started our drive up the Pacific Coast Highway (which will be our route home) and camped near the Beach in San Clemente. We made the long walk down to watch the sunset on the beach, meaning we have now officially been to both the Atlantic and the Pacific on this trip.
With Becca and I feeling like we had head colds and with planning to see family over the weekend, we decided that it would be prudent to take COVID tests this evening. Unfortunately, 4 of the 6 of us tested positive for COVID. This is new and unexpected territory for us, but we’ll pivot….
