August 15th - Day 64

We made it back to Oregon! A couple more days and we’ll be home. If it weren’t for camping with good friends the next couple of nights, there is more than one family member that would prefer to drive straight home at this point. I on the other hand, have a plan and schedule and want to finish executing on it…

Today, we started our day in Crescent City, CA and drove up the coastline to Bullards Beach State Park (near Bandon, OR) where we are camping for the next two nights. At Bullards Beach, we are camping with Becca’s best friend from childhood, Mary (along with her family). When we were planning the last little stretch of our drive home up the Oregon coast, it was important to Becca that we camped here at Bullards Beach as this is where her family would often go camping when she was growing up and she has fond memories of camping here. Unfortunately, we don’t have horses to ride on the beach like she did growing up, but I’m sure we’ll still enjoy the beach.

A few highlights from the day:

  • Driving up the Oregon Coast from California, we drove through Gold Beach, OR. This is the place I lived between the ages of 1 and 6. We took the opportunity to drive by the houses that my family lived in during that time, along with the school building where I attended Head Start (sadly my only memory from Head Start is being sent home from school for having head lice).

  • Continuing our drive up the coast, we ended in Bandon, OR. Both Becca and I have numerous memories from Bandon, OR during our perspective childhoods. She remembers going to Cranberry Sweats with her family and I remember going to the cheese factory to have ice cream. So, we had to do both with our family. Unfortunately, Cranberry Sweats was closing as we got there, so our kids were only able to recreate my ice cream memories.

  • Elias put his gentlemen skills to use today and he observed a need and wrangled an older women’s two small dogs who had escaped her vehicle and were not listening to her calls.

  • Obadiah relaxed on the floor of a book store in Bandon enjoying a pile of picture books while the girls enjoyed checking out a few little jewelry and clothing shops in the small coastal town.

  • As mentioned above, we ended our day at Bullards Beach State Park and will be camping with Mary and her family. When we arrived, Mary’s parents and her brother’s family were also with them, having made a day trip to the beach. It was great to catch up with them for a short bit before they had to leave to drive back to Roseburg.
