August 14th - Day 63
Over the last week, it has almost felt like celebrating Obadiah’s birthday has not ended (trying to make it special for him since we are not at home). Well, today was his actual birthday, so the celebrations continued. This included meals picked by OB and even a birthday banner hung by Becca in the RV. I’m pretty sure he had a great day (actually, a great week).
A few highlights from the day:
We started the day by finishing driving the remainder of the “Avenue of the Giants” in Humboldt Redwoods State Park before heading north to the Redwoods National Park.
When we arrived at the National Park, the first stop was the visitors center near the town of Orick, CA. Obadiah was eager to become a Junior Ranger once again (#15 of the trip). We commemorated this accomplishment by getting him a junior ranger hat that coordinates with his vest he loves to proudly wear.
Aubrey fell in love with and purchased herself a “banana slug” stuffed animal in the gift shop and then proudly picked up a live one later in the day on our hiking trail…she has always been our bravest child with bugs and critters. Ironically, when we got to our KOA campground this evening, the row our campsite was on was called “Banana Slug Ln.”.
We continued north to Elk Prairie where we stopped and hiked for a couple hours. Since we have a couple young kids, any hike that is more than a couple miles is are usually not in the cards. Yet today we successfully hiked for 3.5 miles (thanks to an error in paths) through an old growth redwood forest. It was a great accomplishment since everyone had great attitudes! We even saw the “Big Tree” that is 1500 years old and has a circumference of nearly 75 feet.
Ironically, my mom and grandma were camping near the Redwoods National Park this weekend with several of their friends and my aunt and uncle. With being in the same area, we ended up meeting up for dinner in Crescent City. They also were able to give Obadiah his birthday presents in person, which he enjoyed.
