August 13 - Day 62

It finally feels like we are on the home stretch of the trip. A couple days in the Redwoods, followed by a couple days on the Oregon Coast, and then we’ll be home. Becca and I were talking today and we certainly have mixed feelings about getting back home. While it will be nice to no longer be in an RV with 4 kids and sleeping in our bed at home, it has also been nice to not have firm commitments for a couple months and to just take life as it came.

A few highlights/significant moments from the day:

  • The kids enjoyed some of the fun activities at the KOA campground before we pulled away including a petting zoo with goats. We are thankful that Aubrey and Elias are able to take the Littles on adventures like this as we packed up the RV.

  • Before leaving California, our kids wanted to eat at either Chick-fil-A or In-N-Out one more time. Yes, we have these in Oregon, but not in Portland. And the ones that are in Oregon always have extremely long lines. So, while I filled up the RV with gas, they walked across the street to Chick-fil-A. Always an enjoyable meal!

  • Today we started our trek through the Redwoods in northern California. So far we have only been to Humboldt Redwoods State Park, but we were able to drive a good portion of the “Avenue of the Giants” today. Besides the Pacific Coast Highway, this is the other iconic drive in California and has been called “the finest forest drive in the world”. Much of it is lined by large redwood trees, that tower over the highway and many of the trees also are literally only inches away from the fog line on the road. With two way traffic and driving a very wide RV, on more than one occasion Becca felt like we were going to lose a side mirror to one of the trees. Thankfully we finished the day with both mirrors!

  • We had reservations to stay at Hidden Springs Campground in the Humboldt State Park tonight. However, when we arrived, I was quickly told that the max vehicle length that they allow is 24 ft. Our RV is 30 ft. Somehow I missed this when I booked the reservations, but there was not much we could do other than scramble to find somewhere else to stay. After calling several places, we finally found a KOA about 20 miles away with space for us for the night. Not what we planned, but we are 1) thankful that we were still able to find somewhere relatively close, and 2) thankful that this has only happened to us once on this trip.
