August 12th - Day 61
Our original plan for today was to have another low key beach day on the north/central California coast, but with the kids really enjoying San Francisco yesterday and with camping fairly close to the city, we decided to pivot with our plans and spend another day in the city.
A few highlights/memorable moments from the day:
The city of San Francisco may be one of the most difficult cities in the country to drive in RV through due to its narrow and sometimes very steep streets. In fact, there are many streets that prohibit vehicles that can carry more than 8 people. Plus, it would have been nearly impossible to find parking for the RV. So I researched and found a place to park in Sausalito (directly across the bay from the city) at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge. From there, we were able to take q ferry into the city.
The ferry dropped us off between Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Warf. The family explored Pier 39 prior while I took a work call. We then ended up getting lunch at Boudin Bakery, known for its famous sourdough. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their lunch.
Living near Lombard St. in Portland, we of course needed to go check out Lombard St. in San Francisco. For those who are not aware, Lombard St. is the famous steep/curvy street that most have seen pictures of (the kind of street that my RV is not allowed on). We walked to the top with more than one child who did not appreciate the steep hill climb, but enjoyed the views as we looked down.
We finished our day in San Francisco by visiting Ghirardelli Square (famous for being where the chocolate originated) and getting their ice cream sundaes before heading back to the ferry. Wherever we go, we all enjoy finding ice cream to eat (it’s a Snyder thing).
We ended the night at the same KOA, just north of the city. The kids enjoyed swimming after dinner while Becca did laundry. And us adults appreciated the full hookups for the RV.
