August 11th - Day 60
Over the years, Becca and I have visited San Francisco a couple times together, and I have been there other times for work. One of our favorite places that we’ve visited has been the Presidio, which is a former military base that occupies the northwest corner of the city. It is the right combination of natural beauty, history, and good food. Considering that it may also be one of the only places I could park an RV in San Francisco, it was certainly a good place for us to take our kids to as we passed through.
When we first arrived at the Presidio, it was lunch time and we needed to find a bite to eat. Fortunately, there was a pod of ethnic food carts where we were all able to find something enjoyable to eat while sitting in the beautiful park. Becca & Aubrey tried Algerian food for the first time.
From the Presidio, we walked along the bay to the Golden Gate Bridge and Fort Point (a fort that dates back to pre-Civil War) which is located directly under the bridge. Being from Portland, we see lots of bridges, but they don’t compare to size and beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge (although, the St John’s Bridge is a close second).
With both Fort Point and the Golden Gate Bridge being National Historic Sites, Obadiah and Ilena were able to become Junior Rangers not just once today, but twice. This is now #13 and #14 for Obadiah.
With spending more time in San Francisco than what we had originally planned for, we decided to find someplace to camp that was closer to the city. We had been planning to camp at Salt Point State Beach, but ended up deciding to stay at the KOA in Petaluma, about forty-five minutes north of the city. The kids were not disappointed as there is a large pool here and they were able to get another evening of swimming in.
