July 27th - Day 45

“The really wonderful moments of joy in this world are not the moments of self-satisfaction, but self-forgetfulness. Standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon and contemplating your own greatness is pathological. At such moments we are made for a magnificent joy that comes from outside ourselves.” — John Piper

Today we stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon. Pictures don’t do justice. Even visiting the second largest canyon in the country a little over a week ago (Palo Duro) did not prepare us for the magnitude and the beauty of the Grand Canyon.

A few highlights of the day:

  • We were staying at the Desert View Campground, which is on the east end of the South Rim. Once we got going for the day, we drove along the South Rim to Grand Canyon Village, were we took in a number of different views, had lunch, and explored gift shops. On the way back to the campground, we stopped at a number of other locations to appreciate the different views of the canyon.

  • Obadiah and Ilena once again were able to become Junior Rangers (#10 of the trip). We have found that there is wide variety in the difficulty of the Junior Ranger booklets/activities that they need to complete at each park. They appreciated the Grand Canyon books as the activities that they were required to complete were suited well to their age and abilities.

  • When we got back to camp, the kids enjoyed a few gifts that Becca’s cousin Megan and her husband Mark bought for them. And, we brought a little bit of Oregon for them too.

  • On a less exciting, but positive note; our kids have learned the art of hand-washing dishes in the RV.
