July 19 - Day 37
Today was a hot one! While we spent the bulk of the day driving, we felt the full force of the heat wave that is currently residing in Texas. Our RV actually has 3 separate air conditioners; one that is powered by the engine and blows air out the dash, and two rooftop units that are powered by the generator. On hot days, we have to have all three units running while driving down the road (yes, we can run our generator while driving). Yet today, the three combined units had trouble keeping up and keeping the RV cool in the extreme Texas heat!
A few highlights/memorable moments from the day:
We said goodbye to the Brame family this morning. After a great visit and even an extra day together, we needed to keep progressing on our journey. It was difficult for everyone to part ways with these dear friends who are more like family and there were certainly tears involved (I won’t name names, but between both families, it was more kids than not).
On our drive through west Texas today, we stopped at the small town of Quanah for refreshments and gas for the RV. Hopefully this was the hottest part of our trip as it was 116 degrees when we stopped and stepped out of the RV. This was a new experience for all of us and one we could have done without!
We arrived at Palo Duro Canyon, near Armarillo, where we are camping for the night. While most people have never heard of Palo Duro Canyon, it is the second largest canyon in the country. It should be a great warm up for us as we will be visiting the largest canyon in the country next week.
This evening, we attended the Texas Outdoor Musical in the canyon. It was certainly an experience that is unique to Texas and Palo Duro. If anyone reading this ever makes it to this part of Texas, they should certainly attend! All 6 of us enjoyed the show despite the heat and it being a late night. Plus, we got a Texas BBQ dinner here before the show.
