July 14th - Day 32

“The task that remains is to cope with our interdependence — to see ourselves reflected in every other human being and to respect and honor our differences.” - Melba Pattillo Beals, of the Little Rock Nine.

We work hard to instill this into our kids and sometimes we are better at it than other times. Yet, this task still remains for us to cope with. We are hopeful that this trip and days like today, will help us to better cope with seeing ourselves reflected in every other human being.

A few highlights from our day:

  • Following a great breakfast that Becca’s Uncle Wayne made for everyone, we toured the National Park’s visitor’s center across the street from North Central High School in Little Rock, AR. North Central High School was the location of the “Little Rock Nine” who integrated a white high school following Brown v. Education. They were assisted in attending by President Eisenhower sending armed troops to escort them into the school. What made this stop even more special was that two of Becca’s cousins attended and graduated from this high school (plus, Ilena and Obadiah were able to become Junior Rangers again - #9).

  • After leaving North Central High School, we found lunch at the River Market in downtown Little Rock along the banks of the Arkansas River. This also happened to be adjacent to the Central Arkansas Nature Center, which we also enjoyed exploring.

  • After we returned to Becca’s aunt and uncle’s house and had a little quite time, Mari took us to their neighborhood pool for a swim. None of us are use to the high muggy temperatures that we’ve had the last week, so everyone jumped on the opportunity to take a dip. All of the kids were thrilled to be able to swim and cool off, given the very warm temperatures they have been experiencing. We were amazing by Obadiah’s new level of confidence in the water!

  • We wrapped up the day like we started it, with a meal at Becca’s aunt and uncle’s house, prepared by her Uncle Wayne. It was a great low key way to end the day.
