July 10 - Day 28
Today marks the end of first 4 weeks of traveling for us. At this point in our trip, the entire family is feeling thankful for this blog as we are starting to forget everything that we’ve done already. Hopefully others are thankful as well.
A few highlights from the day:
As I mentioned last week, one of things that we are doing on this trip is giving our kids different church experiences as we visit different people and parts of the country, remembering that there are different styles of worship of our God. Since we were in Atlanta, we took the opportunity to attend a church service this morning at Ebenezer Baptist. This was a great cultural and historical experience for our kids. On the cultural side, we were able to attend a historically black church were we were the minority. Our kids were able to see their style of worship (they appreciated the energy) and feel what it is like to be a minority. On the historical side, the building and congregation carries great weight; it was not just the church home to MLK Jr, but has also been the home to significant events like John Lewis’ funeral service.
Yesterday when we were talking with the friends we were staying with, they mentioned that they remembered my cinnamon rolls that I made for them years ago in Portland. So…following church today, we headed back to the Mason’s home outside of Atlanta and I started in on making brunch for everyone before we left; cinnamon rolls, a potato hash, and eggs. It was a great way to wrap up our time with them before we left Atlanta.
Following brunch, we headed north to Chattanooga, TN to visit other friends that left Portland a year ago. They blessed us with a yummy dinner and the chance to catch up on laundry. It has been great to be able to connect with so many friends as we travel throughout the states. We are looking forward to further enjoying the Bedi family tomorrow and getting a glimpse of their new life in Chattanooga.
